Kata Information

The idea of a kata is something rather unique to Eastern martial arts. The word kata does not have a simple translation. Perhaps, it could be translated as a choreographed performance or dance, but it is more than that. A kata is a sequence of movements that are designed to teach something. In Shotokan, kata teach many things. All are used to teach self-defense techniques. However, each one also teaches the student about balance, breathing, timing, and body mechanics. Most kata also teach other nuances as well.

The pages in this section are not intended for instructional purposes. Rather, they are meant more as study aids for those who already know the forms but may need the occasional refresher on the sequence, names, or rough motion of the techniques.
