Beginner Terms
Romaji Pronounciation English

san sahn three
shi/yon shee/yone four
go go five
roku roe-koo six
shichi/nana sheech-eenana/nah-nah seven
hachi hah-chee eight
ku koo nine
ju joo ten
Four and seven have alternate words because shi is also the word for death. So, the alternates are more polite ways of saying the number. In karate, however, it is customary to stick to shi and shichi.
